Mayan civilization recession in the 8th and 9th centuries. Overpopulated population, foreign invasion, rebel farmers, the collapse of key trade routes, great drought ... are all things can cause great civilization to decline.

1. Maya Calendar - a great civilization achievement

The Maya are very focused on recording the history of people. Although they were not the first people to think of a calendar, they also created four separate calendar systems for separate periods. Depending on the need, the Mayans use several different types of calendars or combine two types of calendars to record an event. The Maya used the Tzolk'in, Haab calendar system, the round calendar system and the Long Count calendar system.

Developed with other Central American civilizations, the Mayans used the vigesimal and the pentatonic system. The pentatonic system is based on the number of fingers in one hand, and the decimal is the whole number of fingers and toes. In Quiche, the word 20 is huvinak, which means "whole body".

In addition, the Maya developed the concept of "zero" in 357, about 900 years earlier than Europe. Ancient texts show that the Mayans, who have a need for work in addition to hundreds of millions and a large number of days, require an accurate way to perform them. The calculation results of astronomy in a space and long time is extremely accurate; the map of the movement of the Moon and the planets is as accurate or as far beyond the other civilizations that observe the universe with the naked eye.

According to the Mayan calendar, the length of a year is 365 days, the time when the Earth rotates around the Sun. This calculation is more accurate than many of the calendars used by Europe at the time (Gregorian calendar).

Long Count calendar is based on the solar year with 365 days. One year the Sun is divided into 18 months, each month has 20 days (using the base counting system 20), five extra days are taken at the end of the year. The days of the month are recorded in serial numbers from 0 to 19 before the month name (0 to 4 for the missing month, 5 days for the end of the year).

According to this calendar, years of continuous succession, no leap years. As a result, the calendar will be deviated back to one day within 4 years. Compared to the modern Gregorian calendar, about 3,257 years have an error of almost 1 day.

A Mayan Long Count calendar cycle lasts 5,125..36 years - called a Great Cycle.

When matching the modern Gregorian calendar, the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012. According to the Mayan calendar and writing, December 21, 2012 was written as 13.0.0.0.0, signaling the end of the Great Cycle.

However, scholars and locals believe this landmark has nothing to do with the end of the world, but just like the New Year's Eve. There are no Mayan texts or documents predicting the end of the world when the Great Cycle ends.
