The part of the ship that is usually submerged underwater is commonly painted a different color than the rest of the ship, with a bright red hue being one of the most popular choices. This is not simply an aesthetic choice, but rather an intentional coating called an antifouling system that protects the ship from growing worms, barnacles and other unwanted intruders.
