The astrolabe is a very ancient astronomical computer for solving problems relating to time and the position of the Sun and stars in the sky. It was invented by a female scientist, philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Hypatia of Alexandria in 370 BC.

In 1965, Dr. Stephanie Kwolek invented Kevlar, a synthetic material that is five times stronger than steel. Her invention saved the lives of thousands of police, fire and military. Kevlar has become the basis for bulletproof vests.
