Almost three out of five most popular shows airing on Indian television are produced under her production company, Balaji Telefilms, which she runs with her daughter Ekta Kapoor. Over the years, her production house has established itself as one stop destination for creating genre defining quality entertainment.
Shobha Kapoor ventured into television production in 1994 by producing soap operas for Doordarshan. After producing a couple of successful films for the national broadcaster, she moved to private general entertainment channels like Zee TV, STAR Plus, Colors TV and Sony TV and produced some path-breaking shows for the Indian audience. Some of her most popular shows made under her banner include ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii’, ‘Kasautii Zindagii Kay’, ‘Kaahin Kissii Roz’, ‘Kahin to Hogaa’, ‘Kkusum’, ‘Kutumb’, ‘Kasamh Se’, ‘Pavitra Rishta’, ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’, ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ and ‘Naagin’ to name a few. All her shows rank high on TRP charts.
After establishing Balaji Telefilms as the leading television production house in India, Shobha branched out to film production by laying the foundation of wholly owned subsidiary Balaji Motion Pictures in 2007, which produces and distributes Hindi films. Some of the films made under the production house include ‘Kyaa Kool Hai Hum’ (2005), ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ (2007), ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’ (2010), ‘Ragini MMS’ (2011), ‘The Dirty Picture’ (2011), ‘Ek Villain’ (2014), and ‘Udta Punjab’ (2016) among others. In 2010, the company incorporated ALT Entertainment Limited, a banner to produce and concentrate on niche and youth subjects in films and television.
